What it is:

Chlorella and Spirulina are both algae.  They have many similarities in terms of their nutritional profiles; however, there are notable differences which make them a dynamic duo when used together.  Chlorella is a fresh water single cell green algae while spirulina is a multi-cell blue green algae found in salt water.   Both are good sources of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, chlorophyll, vitamins, and minerals. They are commonly used as nutritional supplements to help improve overall health.  Supporting the body to rid itself of toxins is among its many health benefits.

Health Benefits:

Chlorella can boost energy, support fat loss, and help to detox heavy metals from the body. Chlorella has been used to treat asthma, halitosis, fibromyalgia, and PMS.  Supporting healthy immune system function and promoting healthier skin is among its many benefits.

Spirulina has a whole host of health boosting superpowers!  Spirulina can support eye, oral, and gut health.  Spirulina can also help with weight loss and boost metabolism.  But that’s not all!  It also supports healthy blood sugar levels as well as lower cholesterol.  And finally, preventing heart disease AND detoxing the body of pollutants can be attributed to this superfood!

How I use it:

Initially, I took 3 tablets 3x a day until I finished the first package.  Currently I keep a package on hand to take intermittently as a general health support, and when I feel like my body could use a detox boost!

How I found it:

Strolling the aisles of my local Whole Foods!

Why I use it:

Even before the advent of modern toxins, the body’s organs of detoxification had a full-time job detoxing the body from its natural cellular waste.  Add pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, food dyes, food enhancers, food stabilizers, genetically modified foods, synthetic fragrances, and non-native electromagnetic frequencies to the cellular waste our body produces, and our bodies are working double and triple time to detox.  So it’s more important than ever to support our bodies to detox!

From getting rid of stubborn excess adipose tissue to resolving chronic disease states, proper detoxification is a major factor in achieving optimal health.  When detoxification pathways become impaired, toxins can build up creating dysregulation and undermining immune system function.  These areas can become attractive breeding grounds for microorganisms which may lead to disease and other chronic conditions.

But detoxifying can be a tricky process.   If you detox too quickly, especially when your organs of detoxification and elimination pathways are not functioning properly,  you can trigger a Herxheimer Reaction.  And although a mild Herxheimer Reaction is nothing to write home about, liberating toxins from their hiding places and releasing them into the bloodstream more quickly than the body can dispose of them can further exacerbate chronic health conditions.

That’s why It is important to first support the body in opening all elimination pathways prior to initiating a detoxification protocol; otherwise, the body may become overwhelmed by the release of toxins that it cannot eliminate.  This could create a toxic burden that may result in worse health than what existed before the detox. Fortunately, there are many natural and gentle ways to begin detoxing the body.  And chlorella/spirulina algae can be a great way to begin!  The mechanism of action is chelation where metals/toxins bind to the algae so that they can then be more easily transported out of the body.  Other methods of detox include fastingsaunas, sweat lodges, herbs including dandelion, enemas, exercise, various bodywork techniques, foot baths, oil pullingrebounding, and vibration plates.  Each has unique mechanisms of action and can complement one another to regularly support the body to detox.

Signs your body might need detox support include alternating constipation and diarrhea, bladder or kidney symptoms, eczema, chronic respiratory infections or asthma. Other common signs may include low energy, acne, headaches, lethargy, “brain fog”, or agitation. Symptoms typically associated with the liver include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, itching, yellowing of eyes or skin, upper right abdominal pain, flu like symptoms, dark urine, and mid back pain.

About The Author - Abby Cain

Abby opened a personal fitness studio in 2010. Although her clients were very committed to achieving better health outcomes through their workouts, their eating behaviors and lifestyle choices outside of the gym were preventing them from achieving optimal health. She began sharing tips and ideas on how to better support the work clients were doing inside the gym by introducing clients to her favorite products she had discovered over the years to support her own health journey. Thus Buy Healthy Live Healthy was born.
