What it is:

A nutritional supplement made from the blackcurrant plant.

Health Benefits:

Black currant seed oil contains many beneficial nutrients that support health including Vitamins A, C, and K and the minerals potassium, calcium, and manganese.  Black currant also contains antioxidants and phytochemicals that help protect the body from oxidative stress and disease.

Essential fatty acids gamma-linolenic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3) are also present in black currant seed oil.  These fats can only be obtained through one’s diet and are necessary for proper brain functioning and maintaining healthy joints’ cell structure and function.  Other health benefits include improved organ health, sexual health and immunity, reduced skin conditions, anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties, and promotes healthy skin, hair and nails.

And don’t forget that essential fatty acids are also necessary for the body to absorb and assimilate fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K!  Absorption of Vitamin D and calcium is also improved.

How I use it:

I take two capsules daily to support symptoms of perimenopause.

How I found it:

I shared with my chiropractor that I was experiencing hot flashes, hair loss, interrupted sleep, and weight gain due to perimenopause.  Throughout his 40-year career, my chiropractor has treated countless women for the same symptoms.  As a Kinesiologist, he tested the black currant seed oil to see if it would be a good support for my symptoms as it had been for other women.  A strong response was given, and I’ve been using it ever since!

Why I use it:

I discovered black currant seed oil to help alleviate my perimenopausal symptoms of hair loss, hot flashes, interrupted sleep and dry mouth.  And it worked to reduce my symptoms!  But let’s look at why…

Black currant seed oil is a complete source of essential fatty acids and one the most bio available sources of gamma-linolenic acid (“GLA”).  GLA is an ingredient the body uses to make hormone-like substances called prostaglandins.  Prostaglandins support the reproductive and endocrine system and help regulate mood.  Whether ovulating or experiencing symptoms related to menopause, black currant seed oil can help to stabilize hormones. Adequate GLA is an important factor in the body’s ability to produce hormones needed for optimal health.

Another reason black currant seed oil is a good choice for menopausal support is that it contains phytoestrogens.  These plant compounds have estrogen-like properties which may help to reduce hormonal fluctuations characteristic of menopause.

About The Author - Abby Cain

Abby opened a personal fitness studio in 2010. Although her clients were very committed to achieving better health outcomes through their workouts, their eating behaviors and lifestyle choices outside of the gym were preventing them from achieving optimal health. She began sharing tips and ideas on how to better support the work clients were doing inside the gym by introducing clients to her favorite products she had discovered over the years to support her own health journey. Thus Buy Healthy Live Healthy was born.
